Are You Afraid of Decorating the Home of your Dreams?
If you’re like me you tend to put everyone else’s needs before your own. And, before you can bat an eye it’s years later, and still very little decorating has been done. Are you afraid you'll never get a chance to decorate your dream home?
What if I told you the sanctuary you dream about is achievable? Even if the house you live in isn’t the home you imagined, I know exactly what it's like to be in yours shoes and I can show you what it takes to get to the other side by following these few steps.
You’re not alone if you to follow the current design trends, but the actuality is whether they work for you, your family, and your lifestyle. The best approach is to consider the current occupants of your home — both full-time residents, as well as occasional and/or overnight guests. Do you have young children, teens or aging parents? Are you an empty nester with visiting grandkids? Is this your vacation home, and, if so, will you be inviting friends and family of all ages to join you at the property? These factors will impact your plan.
Next, you’ll want to discover your design style. Your home should reflect you, who you are, the people you love, where you’ve been, and where you want to go. Most importantly, your home should be your sanctuary. A relaxing and comfortable space where you can begin and end your day in comfort.
You might like the sleek look of a modern kitchen with minimal furnishings, but you may discover you’ll be happiest with more of a transitional look and feel that better suits your lifestyle. With all the choices out there, I know, the options can seem endless, but don’t let that overwhelm you! The best part of design process is the discovery. It’s like finding your true match that only you can identify. In the end, it’s a truly gratifying experience.
The quickest and easiest way to find your style is to take a design style survey.
Once you narrowed down your true design style, you’ll want to do your homework. Designers and creatives love to use the heck out of Houzz, Design Milk and Architectural Digest for design inspiration. But don’t limit yourself there! Pinterest can quickly translate your dreams and design inspiration into reality. One of the most common reasons homeowners use Pinterest is for inspiration. It’s great for discovering and sharing new ideas, and can be used as an informal design board to collect your likes, dislikes, wants and needs.
When it comes to specific colors, materials and finishes, conveying your ideas to your designer and builder through photos and drawings will be much clearer than trying to describe them verbally. Keep a journal, or a Pinterest board, with clippings or files of digital downloads of homes and ideas that represent what you’re looking for in your dream home.
