The Best Way to Decorate for Spring

Time for a Change

Transitioning from the drab Winter to the bright colors of Spring involves quite a few changes.  Modifying our wardrobes, preparing our gardens and adjusting to losing an hour of sleep. Spring, for me, is a time of new beginnings and simply signifies a time for growth.

A client called me earlier this month to collaborate on her latest interior projects for the spring, as she's been on the hunt for new bedding and interior throw pillows to liven up her décor for the new season.  Little did she know that ever since I was a child “seasonal decorating” has been a quarterly ritual for me.  In my younger years I didn't quite understand why Mom updated our interior so frequently, but I came to appreciate it and welcome the change as I got older.

Change is good. Change is healthy. Change is inevitable.

Welcome change.  Whether it’s personal or in this case, seasonal change is something we all want.  We continuously crave growth; and growing is what spring is really all about.  Spring is about renewal, rebirth and re-growth.

If you’re in need of a little re-growth and change, read on for tips that will inspire you to update your surroundings.

Start with a Home Edit

It’s best to begin with your main living space and remove the number of items you have on display.  Put away the heavy faux fur throws and cable knit blankets, and replace them with lighter fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Begin by separating things into categories: sell, donate, toss and keep. Take a good look around and focus on your room’s best feature; which is typically the fireplace, built-ins or windows.

Give your space a deep clean.  Wipe away all the winter dust, clean your windows, shake out area rugs, replace burnt out lightbulbs.  Get into the nooks and crannies clean them out!  It feels so good.

Add a Pop of Color

True spring's best colors are usually warm greens, yellows, orangey reds, very peachy pinks and every shade of light brown from tan to palest beige.  You can add a few pops of color to your interior through florals, your artwork, bedding, throw pillows or window panels.

Speaking of window panels, curtains help bring the room together by providing a backdrop for the design. Using the largest piece of furniture as the dominant color, choose a complimentary color, or colors, for your secondary fabrics. If you can't find drapes in the right shade, you can try tinting them with liquid dye.

Fresh Flowers

One of the easiest ways to update any room is to add a bouquet of fresh flowers.  Gone are the days of dull faux floral arrangements and fresh blooms are a reminder of Spring.  New buds and dormant plants will soon be coming back to life, which is an exciting time for growth.  A simple floral arrangement offers a small pop of color with big volume and is surprisingly easy to pull off. All you need is a vase or vessel with a bit of character, and several tall, brightly-colored floral sprigs or flowering branches.

Go Green

If you've sacrificed a few houseplants to the winter season, replace them with new greenery.  Bringing in some live plants to give a feeling of nature in the room. Cut some limbs from your garden, or ask a neighbor if you can get a piece of their plant for a start.  You can get plants for little or nothing.  And if you don’t have a green thumb, give succulents a try.  They require very little maintenance and add just the right amount of life.
